The Wealth of Nations (Annotated)
Über das eBook
In The Wealth of Nations, Adam Smith offers a foundational inquiry into the causes of economic prosperity, examining labor, markets, trade, taxation, and the division of labor with remarkable analytical breadth. Written in lucid eighteenth-century prose, the work combines moral philosophy, historical observation, and practical policy critique. Its argument for natural liberty and competitive exchange helped define classical political economy, while its famous metaphor of the "invisible hand" continues to frame debates about markets and public welfare. Smith was a Scottish Enlightenment thinker, moral philosopher, and professor at Glasgow, deeply shaped by intellectual circles that prized reason, empirical inquiry, and social improvement. His earlier Theory of Moral Sentiments informs this book's concern with human motivation, sympathy, and institutional order. Travels in Europe and conversations with statesmen and philosophers sharpened his opposition to mercantilist restrictions and monopolies. This is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand capitalism's intellectual origins, modern economics, or the relationship between freedom and governance. Though written in 1776, its insights—and tensions—remain indispensable.
