The Black Arrow

Robert Louis Stevenson (1850–1894) was a Scottish-born English writer, a classic of neo-romanticism, and an author whose name is forever associated with the flourishing of 19th-century adventure fiction. His work combines the romantic spirit of travel with precise historical detail and vivid psychological portraits of characters. Stevenson is best known for Treasure Island and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, but his historical novels also remain outstanding examples of the genre.

The novel The Black Arrow (1888) immerses the reader in 15th-century England, torn apart by the internecine Wars of the Roses. The protagonist, young Dick Shelton, suddenly loses his mentor, killed by a mysterious black arrow. This event sets in motion a rapid series of trials: Dick encounters the Freeshooters led by John the Avenger, discovers the true value of loyalty and betrayal, endures danger, and finds love. He will meet the future King of England, earn a knighthood, and uncover the secret of the avenger with the black arrows.
