Über das eBook

In *Adventures of the Scarlet Pimpernel*, Emmuska Orczy develops the masked-hero tradition through a sequence of daring rescues set against the Terror of the French Revolution. Sir Percy Blakeney's apparent foppishness conceals an agile intelligence, while coded messages, disguises, narrow escapes, and reversals of fortune sustain the narrative's brisk melodramatic rhythm. The book combines historical romance, adventure fiction, espionage, and comedy of manners, contrasting aristocratic elegance with revolutionary violence and exploring the unstable boundary between performance and identity. Its episodic structure extends the world introduced in *The Scarlet Pimpernel*, placing the work within the late-Victorian and Edwardian fascination with swashbuckling heroes, secret societies, and morally charged historical fiction. Orczy, born Emma Magdolna Rozália Mária Jozefa Borbála Orczy in Hungary, was raised amid aristocratic privilege before her family's circumstances brought her to Britain. Her transnational experience, interest in European history, and career as a novelist, dramatist, and artist shaped her unusually vivid sense of class, exile, and political upheaval. The Pimpernel stories also reflect the period's anxieties about revolution and mass politics, while presenting individual courage and aristocratic loyalty as counterforces to tyranny. This volume will reward readers interested in historical adventure, detective-like plotting, and the origins of the modern superhero. It is especially suited to those who value theatrical characterization, moral suspense, and the pleasures of a brilliantly constructed disguise, while also inviting reflection on the romanticized politics of its historical imagination.
