The Gamester

"The Gamester" is a tragedy by the eighteenth century playwright Edward Moore. It follows the woes of Mrs. Beverly who laments upon the loss of her family's fortune upon the reckless acts of her husband's gamblings. But that is not the only tragedy that will result from his indulgences… The play was quite popular and it is upon The Gamester that Moore's literary reputation rests; the play was much-produced in England and the United States in the century after Moore's death. The oft-quoted phrase "rich beyond the dreams of avarice" is spoken by Mrs. Beverley in the play's second act.
