Über das eBook

The Articles of Faith is a systematic exposition of Latter-day Saint doctrine organized around Joseph Smith's thirteen concise statements of belief. Combining scriptural citation, theological argument, and a measured Victorian prose style, the book treats such subjects as the Godhead, human agency, repentance, baptism, priesthood authority, revelation, Israel, and the Millennium. Its literary context is both apologetic and catechetical: it seeks to define a young religious tradition with intellectual rigor while presenting its claims to a broader Christian readership. James E. Talmage, a scientist, educator, and later an apostle of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, brought to the work an unusual union of empirical discipline and religious conviction. Trained in chemistry and geology and experienced as a lecturer, he wrote with clarity, order, and confidence. His background helps explain the book's methodical structure and its effort to reconcile faith, reason, and revealed authority. Readers interested in Mormon theology, American religious history, or nineteenth-century doctrinal writing will find this volume indispensable. It remains especially valuable for those seeking a formal, historically influential presentation of Latter-day Saint belief.

Über den Autor

James E. Talmage (1862-1933) was an English chemist, geologist, and religious leader who served as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1911 until his death. Talmage authored several books on religion, the most prominent of which are Jesus the Christ and Articles of Faith. The books remain classics in Mormon literature. An academic and religious scholar, Talmage did not believe that science conflicted with his religious views. Regarding the conflicting Mormon views on evolution, Talmage attempted to mediate between church leaders B.H. Roberts and Joseph Fielding Smith who disagreed about evolution and the origin of man.
