The Complete Works of Xenophon (Annotated)
About the eBook
The Complete Works of Xenophon gathers the remarkable range of a writer who moved with equal confidence among history, philosophy, biography, military memoir, and practical instruction. From the vivid campaign narrative of the Anabasis to the Socratic portraits of the Memorabilia and Symposium, from the political imagination of the Cyropaedia to treatises on horsemanship, hunting, and household management, the collection reveals a lucid Attic prose style prized in antiquity for its clarity, restraint, and moral seriousness. Xenophon stands at the intersection of classical Greek historiography and philosophical literature, offering a pragmatic counterpoint to both Thucydidean severity and Platonic abstraction. Xenophon was an Athenian aristocrat, soldier, exile, and disciple of Socrates, and these experiences deeply shaped his writings. His participation in the expedition of the Ten Thousand gave him firsthand authority as a military observer, while his association with Socrates informed his lifelong concern with virtue, leadership, discipline, and education. His admiration for Spartan institutions and Persian models of rule also reflects a mind testing Greek political assumptions against lived experience. This volume is indispensable for readers seeking a comprehensive view of Greek thought beyond the canonical triad of Plato, Aristotle, and Thucydides. It will especially reward those interested in leadership, ethics, military history, and the practical imagination of classical antiquity.

About the Author
Xenophon of Athens (c. 431 BC – 354 BC) was an ancient Greek philosopher, historian, soldier, mercenary, and student of Socrates. Xenophon's works span several genres and are written in plain-language Attic Greek, for which reason they serve as translation exercises for contemporary students of the Ancient Greek language. As a historian, Xenophon is known for recording the history of his time, the late-5th and early-4th centuries BC, in such works as the Hellenica, which covered the final seven years and the aftermath of the Peloponnesian War (431–404 BC), thus representing a thematic continuation of Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian War.
