About the eBook

Alexander Pushkin's Eugene Onegin is a novel in verse that brilliantly fuses romantic sensibility with ironic social observation. Written in the celebrated "Onegin stanza," it follows the disenchanted aristocrat Onegin, the introspective poet Lensky, and the morally luminous Tatyana through love, rejection, duel, and belated regret. At once intimate and panoramic, the work captures the manners, ennui, and contradictions of early nineteenth-century Russian society while reshaping European Byronic and realist traditions into a distinctly Russian literary idiom. Pushkin, often regarded as the founder of modern Russian literature, wrote Eugene Onegin during a period marked by exile, political scrutiny, and intense artistic maturation. His cosmopolitan education, familiarity with French and English literature, and acute awareness of Russia's cultural dependence on Europe inform the poem's subtle tensions. Through playful narration and psychological insight, Pushkin transforms personal and national experience into a foundational artistic achievement. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in Russian literature, the evolution of the modern novel, or poetry's capacity to portray society with wit and emotional precision. Readers will find in it both a dazzling literary performance and a profound meditation on character, choice, and missed possibility.

About the Author

Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837) was a Russian poet, playwright, and novelist of the Romantic era who is considered by many to be the greatest Russian poet and the founder of modern Russian literature. Pushkin published his first poem at the age of 15, and was widely recognized by the literary establishment by the time of his graduation. Upon graduation, Pushkin recited his controversial poem "Ode to Liberty", one of several that led to his being exiled by Tsar Alexander the First. While under the strict surveillance, Pushkin wrote his most famous play, the drama Boris Godunov. His novel in verse, Eugene Onegin, was serialized between 1825 and 1832. Pushkin died at age 37, after he was critically wounded in a duel with Georges d'Anthès.
