About the eBook

First published in 1897, Richard Marsh's The Beetle is a sensational Gothic novel of pursuit, possession, and imperial dread. Its shape-shifting Egyptian antagonist invades late-Victorian London, unsettling boundaries of gender, race, class, and rational authority. Told through multiple narrators, the novel combines melodrama, detective fiction, occult horror, and fin-de-siècle anxieties, standing in provocative dialogue with Bram Stoker's Dracula, which appeared the same year. Richard Marsh was the pseudonym of Richard Bernard Heldmann (1857–1915), a prolific writer deeply attuned to the demands of the popular press and circulating libraries. His career in journalism and genre fiction sharpened his taste for suspense, cliffhangers, and psychological disturbance. The Beetle reflects both his commercial skill and his understanding of a culture fascinated by Egyptology, mesmerism, degeneration theory, and fears of reverse colonization. This novel is recommended to readers interested in Victorian Gothic beyond the established canon. It rewards attention not only as a gripping supernatural thriller, but also as a revealing document of imperial unease and sexual ambiguity. Scholars, students, and general readers alike will find in The Beetle a disturbing, energetic, and historically resonant work.
