A Legend of Montrose takes place during the Earl of Montrose's Highland campaign on behalf of King Charles I. The story deals with a love triangle between Allan M'Aulay, his friend the Earl of Menteith, both members of Montrose's army, and Annot Lyle, a young woman who has been brought up by the M'Aulays since being captured as a girl.

Sir Walter Scott (1771–1832) was a Scottish historical novelist, playwright and poet. He was the first modern English-language author to have a truly international career in his lifetime and many of his works remain classics of British literature. Famous titles include Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, The Lady of the Lake, Waverley, The Heart of Midlothian and The Bride of Lammermoor.
