Born in Sweden to immigrant parents and without Swedish citizenship until 1958,

excuse. Through archive research, philosophical reflection, close self-examination and
recurring scenes of vulnerability, Virro searches for the links between what happened
to him, what he did, and what he passed on.

Thomas Virro is both the author and the subject of this book. Born in
Sweden to immigrant parents, he and his sister became Swedish
citizens in 1958, an experience that later became central to his
exploration of statelessness, belonging and identity. Virro is the
author of Oklara identiteter (Shadowed Branches), Att födas som
statslös (Being Born Stateless) and Tystnadens arv (The Legacy of
Silence). Through autobiographical writing and genealogical
research, he has sought to understand the silences surrounding his
father Feliks, his family history and his own relationships. In When

self-study of memory, responsibility and reconciliation.
