The strangeness of the writer

"The Curiosities of the Writer" is a book that combines politics and humor. Salim Sarkis, in his satirical style, depicts the practices of the Ottoman censor, the "writer," who transformed journalism into an arena for linguistic frivolity, adding, deleting, and turning meanings upside down to protect the Sultan's image from any criticism. However, this frivolity was not without stinging anecdotes and witty paradoxes that journalists have long joked about. سليم سركيس (1867 – 1926) أديب وصحفي لبناني من رواد النهضة الأدبية والصحافية في المشرق العربي. وُلد في بيروت ونشأ في بيئة مشبعة بالثقافة، فسافر إلى مصر حيث لمع نجمه وأسس عددًا من المجلات والصحف، أبرزها مجلة سركيس التي أصبحت منبرًا للأدب والفكر في زمنها. كتب المقالة والقصة والمسرحية، كما اهتم بنشر الترجمات والتعريف بالآداب الغربية، وساهم في تجديد الأسلوب الصحفي والأدبي العربي. عُرف بجرأته في تناول القضايا الاجتماعية والسياسية، وكان له دور بارز في تشكيل حركة الصحافة العربية الحديثة، مما جعله واحدًا من الأسماء البارزة في تاريخ النهضة العربية.
