The Quiet Angel; Love and Politics; At the Small Court; The Unsolved Monarch
Über das eBook
Theodor Mundt (1808–1861) was a German writer, literary critic, philosopher, and aesthetician, one of the representatives of the Young Germany movement. A graduate of the University of Berlin and professor of literary history, he left a significant mark not only on 19th-century German criticism but also on the historical novel. The husband of the renowned writer Louise Mühlbach, Mundt shared her interest in the fates of great personalities and the mysteries of Europe's royal houses.
This volume includes four of the writer's historical novels: "The Quiet Angel," "Love and Politics," "At the Small Court," and "The Unsolved Monarch." All are united by a common historical backdrop—the life and dramas of the Russian court at the end of the 18th century. The reader is introduced to a world of court intrigue, love affairs, and political clashes, centered on Emperor Paul I—an enigmatic, controversial, and tragic ruler.
Mundt masterfully combines historical accuracy with psychological depth and subtle character analysis. His novels not only convey the atmosphere of the Catherine and Pauline eras but also explore internal conflicts between power and conscience, duty and emotion, the personal and the national.
This book is a striking example of the European perspective on Russian history, imbued with philosophical reflection, drama, and a profound interest in the fate of man at the mercy of fate and time.
