The Struggle for the Throne

Ernst Pitaval (1829–1887) was a German writer and master of the historical adventure novel, renowned for his works on the fate of Mary Stuart. His multi-volume narratives, written in the second half of the 19th century, remain vibrant and dramatic, captivating readers with their precise historical details and vivid characters.

The novel "The Struggle for the Throne," which opens Pitaval's trilogy about the Scottish queen, covers her years in France. Young Mary Stuart marries the Dauphin Francis II, but her happiness proves short-lived: the sudden death of her husband not only deprives her of personal happiness but also throws her into a maelstrom of political turmoil that will haunt her throughout her life. From this moment on, the queen's fate becomes a drama of constant confrontation—with enemies, allies, circumstances, and history itself, leading her to a tragic end at Fotheringhay Castle.
