Arachne

Georg Moritz Ebers (1837-1898) was a German writer, historian, and a leading expert on ancient Egypt. His novels are distinguished by a rare combination of scholarly precision and artistic expressiveness: meticulously researched sources are transformed into living images of distant eras.

The novel "Arachne" (also known as "Arachnea") is set in Alexandria, a crossroads of cultures where Hellenic traditions collide with Egyptian heritage. The central figure is the sculptor Hermon, who strives to interpret mythological images in a new way. He decides to depict the weaver Arachne not as a goddess, but as a mere mortal, choosing the proud Egyptian woman Ledscha as his model. But the artist's creative vision turns tragic: the humiliated and insulted girl becomes an instrument of retribution, and personal passions become intertwined with the eternal questions of art, jealousy, and fate.

Arachne is not only a story of fatal love, but also a reflection on the price of creative freedom, the confrontation between pride and humility, human passion and divine justice.
