Divine Comedy

Here is a complete illustrated edition of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, an immortal masterpiece of world literature that influenced the philosophy, art, and culture of Europe. This edition combines all three canonical parts of the poem: Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise, presented in classic Russian translations recognized as benchmarks for the depth of meaning and poetic expressiveness.
Dmitry Min's translations (Hell and Purgatory) preserve the rigor and philological accuracy of the original, following the complex structure of Dante's terza rima. Nikolai Golovanov's translation (Paradise) combines philosophical depth with lyrical perfection, revealing the mystical ascent to divine light.
The edition is supplemented with more than 200 illustrations by two great artists: Gustave Doré and Felicien Bayros. Doré's 19th-century engravings became the canonical visualization of Dante's images, from the dark depths of Hell to the shining spheres of Paradise. Bayros's early 20th-century works bring unique symbolism and esoteric detail, revealing the allegories and hidden meanings of the text.

Данте Алигьери (1265–1321) — крупнейший поэт итальянского Средневековья, философ, политик и автор бессмертной «Божественной комедии». Родился во Флоренции в знатной, но небогатой семье. Учился риторике, поэзии и богословию, был знаком с трудами Аристотеля, Фомы Аквинского и Боеция.

В молодости влюбился в Беатриче Портинари — этот идеализированный образ стал центральной темой его поэзии, особенно в «Новой жизни» (La Vita Nuova). Параллельно с литературной деятельностью активно участвовал в политике, вступил в партию белых гвельфов. Из-за политических интриг в 1302 году был приговорён к изгнанию из родной Флоренции.

В изгнании Данте написал свои главные произведения. Вершиной творчества стала «Божественная комедия» — аллегорическая поэма, в которой он описал путешествие души через Ад, Чистилище и Рай, создав масштабную картину мира, наполненную богословием, философией и личными аллюзиями.

Умер в Равенне в 1321 году. Могила Данте находится там до сих пор, несмотря на многовековые попытки Флоренции вернуть его прах.
