Free Woman: A Novel

Victor Marguerite (1867-1942) was a prominent French writer, poet and journalist, whose name is associated with the naturalist school. At the height of his career, he was president of the Society of Literary Workers and a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor, although he was repeatedly criticized for his boldness and provocativeness. His work, spanning more than half a century, invariably provoked heated debates, especially after the publication of independent works such as "The Prostitute" and "Free Woman".

The novel "Free Woman" (1922), known under the original title "La garçonne", was a real event of its time. It is the story of a young Parisian woman, Monique Lherbier, who decides to challenge the traditional foundations of society and seeks freedom in love, career and self-expression. The novel masterfully shows the heroine's internal struggle, torn between conservative expectations and a thirst for independence.

After the book was published, Marguerite was accused of pornography and propaganda of immorality, deprived of the Legion of Honor, but his work gained enormous popularity. "Free Woman" was translated into many languages ​​and became a symbol of women's emancipation in the 1920s.
