Svinin was an artist-writer in the full sense of the word: he described his travels not only in words, but also created unique sketches of the area, calling such works "picturesque journeys." His ethnographic essays "Pictures of Russia and the Life of Its Diverse Peoples," published after his death, became a valuable source of knowledge about the culture and life of the peoples of Russia. Among Svinin's other significant works, "Sights of St. Petersburg and Its Environs" stands out.
Svinin's passion for collecting was reflected in the creation of a unique collection of antiques, paintings, portraits, coins, manuscripts, and books, known as the "Russian Museum." His works of fiction combine a fascinating plot with careful elaboration of historical details, which makes them interesting and educational.
