شكيب أرسلان، الكاتب والأديب والمفكر العربي اللبناني، لُقِّب بأمير البيان لغزارة إنتاجه الفكري. وُلد عام 1869م في قرية الشويفات قرب بيروت، وتأثر بعدد كبير من أعلام عصره مثل الشيخ عبد الله البستاني وأحمد فارس الشدياق. كان كثير الترحال، حيث زار العديد من البلدان والتقى بأعلام الأدب والفكر في عصره، وأجاد عدة لغات منها العربية والتركية والفرنسية والألمانية. أمضى جزءًا كبيرًا من حياته في الرحلات، وسجل مشاهداته في مؤلفاته الشهيرة مثل "الحلل السندسية" و"لماذا تأخر المسلمون وتقدم غيرهم؟". كان لا يثق بوعود الحلفاء للعرب، وحذر من استغلال الأجانب للشقاق بين العرب والأتراك. دعا إلى الوحدة العربية وكان من أشد الناس فرحًا بتأسيس الجامعة العربية عام 1945م. عاد إلى وطنه عام 1946م وتوفي بعد حياة حافلة بالعطاء والكفاح.
