إسماعيل مظهر، هو مفكر مصري ليبرالي وأحد أعلام النهضة العلمية والثقافية في مصر الحديثة. يعتبر رائدًا في ميدان الفكر والترجمة، حيث خصص اهتمامًا كبيرًا للفكر الديني والاجتماعي في مشروعه الفكري. وُلد في القاهرة في عام 1891 في أسرة ثرية ذات أصول تركية، وكان له أثر كبير في ميدان الهندسة. درس في المدرسة الناصرية واستكمل تعليمه في المدرسة الخديوية، حيث درس الأحياء وتعلم اللغة والأدب في الأزهر الشريف. انطلقت مسيرته الصحفية منذ صغره حيث أسس جريدة "الشعب" عام 1909، وشارك في النضال السياسي مع الزعيم الوطني مصطفى كامل. اتسمت كتاباته في الصحف بطابع الحرية الذاتية والتجديد، ورفعت آراءه عالياً فوق الأهواء الشخصية. تولى رئاسة تحرير مجلة "المقتطف"، ورفعها إلى أوج سُلم المجد. قاد إسماعيل مظهر التحول في العالم العربي إلى منظرية النشوء والتطور عند داروين، ونادى بضرورة الإصلاح الاجتماعي، حيث رأى أن الحل يكمن في تأسيس حزب جديد أطلق عليه اسم "الوفد الجديد". قدم مظهر مساهمات معرفية ثرة في عالم الثقافة، منها "وثبة الشرق" التي كشف فيها عن السمات العقلية للشخصية التركية الحديثة، و"تاريخ الفكر العربي"، و"معضلات المدنية الحديثة"، و"مصر في قيصرية الإسكندر المقدوني". انتقل إلى رحمة الله في الرابع من فبراير عام 1962.
