The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ (Annotated)
Über das eBook
The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ presents an intensely detailed meditation on the final hours of Jesus, from the agony in Gethsemane through the Crucifixion and burial. Framed as a visionary narrative attributed to the Augustinian nun Anne Catherine Emmerich and recorded by Clemens Brentano, the work combines devotional theology, sensory description, and dramatic, almost novelistic reconstruction. Its elaboration of landscapes, gestures, secondary figures, and emotional states places it within the tradition of Catholic Passion meditation, while its vivid immediacy anticipates later forms of religious spiritual autobiography and imaginative historical narration. The book's purpose is not critical biography but compassionate contemplation: by concentrating on physical suffering and human response, it invites readers to enter the Gospel story affectively and morally. Anne Catherine Emmerich (1774–1824), a German religious visionary and mystic, lived amid the upheavals of post-Reformation Catholic Europe and was reputed to bear the stigmata. During her final years, Brentano visited and transcribed accounts of her visions, shaping the material into the narrative known today. Because the text is mediated through transcription, editing, and devotional interpretation, it should be read with attention to questions of authorship and historical reliability, as well as to its spiritual influence. This book will especially reward readers interested in Christian mysticism, Passion literature, visionary testimony, and the history of Catholic devotion. It is best approached as a work of contemplative imagination rather than a substitute for the canonical Gospels or modern historical scholarship. For those willing to engage its intensity critically and prayerfully, it offers a powerful account of suffering, sacrifice, compassion, and redemption.

Über den Autor
Anne Catherine Emmerich (8 September 1774 – 9 February 1824) was a Roman Catholic Augustinian nun, stigmatic, mystic, visionary and ecstatic. Born in Flamschen, a farming community in Coesfeld, then part of the Bishopric of Münster, Germany, she is best known for her detailed visions of the life and passion of Jesus Christ, documented in 'The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ'. Tentatively respected and also scrutinized by the Church, Emmerich displayed the marks of the stigmata during her lifetime, which garnered both veneration and skepticism. She relayed her visions to the poet Clemens Brentano, who compiled her accounts. Although the authenticity of Brentano's writings was questioned, Emmerich's profound impact on Catholic spirituality is reflected in her beatification by Pope John Paul II in 2004. Her visions have been drawn upon by various authors and filmmakers, most notably by Mel Gibson for his 2004 film 'The Passion of the Christ'. Emmerich's deep devotion and descriptive narrations of her visions continue to influence the faithful, and her works remain a subject of interest both for the devout and scholars of mysticism. Despite controversies surrounding their authorship, Emmerich's narrations provide a rich, evocative portrayal of Christ's suffering, imbued with an intense piety characteristic of her mystical experiences.
