R. M. Ballantyne (1825–1894) was a Scottish author of juvenile fiction who penned over 100 books and was best known for his adventure stories of the Victorian era. Born Robert Michael Ballantyne in Edinburgh, he was part of a famous family of printers and publishers. At the age of 16, he moved to Canada and worked for the Hudson's Bay Company, an experience that provided rich material for his later writing. After returning to Scotland, he began his literary career with his first book, 'Hudson's Bay: or, Life in the Wilds of North America' (1848). After its success, he chose to focus on writing for the young, aiming to both entertain and educate. His ability to weave factual information into his narratives became a hallmark of his literary style.
