Über den Autor

Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant, widely known as Guy de Maupassant, is considered one of France's greatest short story writers. Born on August 5, 1850, in the Normandy region of France, de Maupassant was a protégé of Gustave Flaubert, who guided his early writing and introduced him to literary circles. De Maupassant's literary career spanned a little over a decade, yet in that time, he wrote six novels, over 300 short stories, and a variety of poems, travel books, and essays. His literature is characterized by its economy of style, precision of language, and a pessimistic worldview often associated with Naturalism and Realism. De Maupassant's masterful short stories typically capture the complexity of human experience with irony and psychological depth, which can be seen in his first published story and subsequent masterpiece, 'Boule de Suif' ('Ball of Fat'), 1880. This novella, which was part of the collection 'Les Soirées de Medan,' poignantly critiques the social hypocrisy of the Franco-Prussian War era. Although de Maupassant's literary acclaim continues to rest primarily on his short fiction, his novels, such as 'Une Vie' (1883) and 'Bel-Ami' (1885), are also celebrated for their insightful depictions of French society. Plagued by recurring mental illness, de Maupassant's career was cut short, and he died in a private clinic on July 6, 1893. His powerful influence on the short story genre is undimmed, and generations of writers have cited him as a key influence.
