A Beginner's History of Philosophy (Vol. 1&2) (Annotated)
Über das eBook
Herbert Ernest Cushman's A Beginner's History of Philosophy (Vol. 1&2) offers a lucid, systematic survey of Western philosophical thought from its Greek beginnings through the major modern schools. Designed as an introduction rather than a specialist monograph, it combines chronological narration with conceptual explanation, placing thinkers in relation to the religious, scientific, and political climates that shaped them. Its prose is measured, didactic, and notably synthetic, reflecting the early twentieth-century ideal of philosophy as a continuous historical conversation. Cushman, an American scholar and teacher associated with the academic professionalization of philosophy, wrote with the needs of students foremost in mind. His work reflects a period when philosophy departments sought to make the canon accessible without sacrificing intellectual seriousness. The book's careful organization, biographical sketches, and attention to doctrine suggest an educator intent on guiding beginners toward disciplined historical understanding rather than mere memorization of names and systems. This two-volume history is recommended for readers seeking a clear entrance into the development of Western philosophy. Though modern scholarship has revised many emphases, Cushman remains valuable for his orderly exposition, breadth, and pedagogical confidence.
