Über das eBook

Ti-Ping Tien-Kwoh (Vols. 1–2) is both a history of the Taiping Rebellion and an impassioned eyewitness defense of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. Combining military narrative, travel writing, political polemic, and ethnographic observation, Lindley presents the movement not as mere disorder but as a revolutionary Christian polity struggling against Qing corruption and foreign misrepresentation. Its vigorous Victorian prose, rich in incident and argument, places it among the most distinctive nineteenth-century Western accounts of China's civil wars. Augustus F. Lindley was a British adventurer and former naval officer whose experiences in China brought him into close contact with the Taiping cause. Unlike many contemporary observers, he wrote from sympathy rather than imperial detachment, claiming personal knowledge of Taiping leaders, campaigns, and social organization. His hostility to Qing rule and to Western intervention shaped a work intended to correct what he saw as a profoundly biased record. This book is recommended to readers interested in modern Chinese history, imperial entanglements, missionary politics, and the literature of eyewitness testimony. Though partisan and sometimes controversial, it remains invaluable: a vivid counter-narrative that illuminates how the Taiping conflict appeared to one committed foreign participant.
