Martyr of the Catacombs (Annotated)
Über das eBook
Martyr of the Catacombs is a compact historical romance set amid the persecutions of early Christians in imperial Rome. Through scenes of subterranean worship, clandestine fellowship, arrest, and witness before pagan authority, James De Mille frames the catacombs as both literal refuge and spiritual emblem. The prose is direct, earnest, and didactic, belonging to the nineteenth-century tradition of Protestant historical fiction that used antiquity to dramatize faith, conscience, and moral courage. James De Mille, a Canadian writer, educator, and professor of classics and rhetoric, was well equipped to imagine the ancient world for a broad readership. His scholarly familiarity with Roman history and his moral seriousness inform the book's atmosphere and purpose. Best known also for adventure, satire, and speculative fiction, De Mille here turns narrative craft toward religious instruction, presenting martyrdom not as spectacle but as testimony to inward conviction. This book is recommended for readers interested in early Christian memory, Victorian religious literature, and historical fiction shaped by ethical purpose. Though brief and plainly written, it offers a vivid window into how nineteenth-century authors interpreted Rome, persecution, and faith. Readers who value devotional seriousness joined to accessible storytelling will find it especially rewarding.
