Über das eBook

History of Spanish and Portuguese Literature (Vol. 1&2) is a pioneering survey of Iberian letters, tracing their development from medieval chronicles, romances, and lyric traditions through the Renaissance, the Golden Age drama of Lope de Vega and Calderón, and the epic, pastoral, and satirical achievements of Portugal. Written in an elegant Enlightenment-critical prose, the work combines historical narration with aesthetic judgment, situating Spanish and Portuguese writing within the broader evolution of European taste, genre, and national character. Friedrich Bouterwek, a German philosopher, critic, and literary historian associated with the intellectual world of Göttingen, brought to this study the comparative ambitions of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century scholarship. His philosophical training and engagement with aesthetics shaped his concern for form, imagination, and cultural spirit, while his distance from Iberia allowed him to interpret its literature as both distinctive and integral to European civilization. This work is recommended to readers seeking more than a catalogue of authors and titles. It offers a historically informed, critically alert account of Iberian literary achievement and remains valuable for scholars, students, and general readers interested in the foundations of modern comparative literary history.
