Über das eBook

The Getting of Wisdom is a penetrating Bildungsroman that follows Laura Rambotham, a gifted, impulsive country girl, through the humiliations and awakenings of an elite Melbourne boarding school. Richardson renders adolescent consciousness with sharp psychological realism, ironic comedy, and unsentimental precision, exposing the rituals of class, gender, religion, and respectability in colonial Australia. Published in 1910, the novel stands as a major early work of Australian literary modernity, attentive to the formation—and deformation—of female identity. Henry Handel Richardson was the pen name of Ethel Florence Lindesay Richardson, an Australian-born writer whose own schooling at Presbyterian Ladies' College in Melbourne deeply informs the novel's setting and emotional truth. Trained also as a musician in Leipzig and later living largely in Europe, Richardson brought to Australian subjects a cosmopolitan discipline, a European psychological subtlety, and a critical distance from colonial social conventions. This is an essential book for readers interested in coming-of-age fiction, women's education, and the social codes that govern youth. Its brilliance lies in its refusal to sentimentalize girlhood: Laura's misreadings, ambitions, and embarrassments become the means by which Richardson reveals wisdom as costly, comic, and painfully earned.
