Über das eBook

Ghosts and Family Legends gathers spectral anecdotes, inherited curses, apparitions, warnings, and uncanny domestic histories into a collection poised between Gothic fiction and folkloric testimony. Catherine Crowe writes in a lucid, conversational Victorian prose that treats marvels not merely as thrills, but as evidence of hidden moral and spiritual laws. The book belongs to the nineteenth-century fascination with mesmerism, spiritualism, and the "true" ghost story, while preserving the older atmosphere of family tradition and oral legend. Crowe was a prolific English novelist, dramatist, and writer on the supernatural, best known for The Night-Side of Nature, a major Victorian compendium of psychic phenomena. Her interest in apparitions, second sight, and unexplained experience was shaped by an age in which science, religion, and popular belief were actively renegotiating their boundaries. Ghosts and Family Legends reflects her conviction that supernatural narratives deserved serious attention rather than easy dismissal. This volume is recommended to readers of Gothic literature, Victorian cultural history, folklore, and early spiritualist writing. It rewards those seeking ghost stories with atmosphere and intellectual purpose, offering not only eerie entertainment but also a revealing glimpse into how the nineteenth century imagined memory, inheritance, conscience, and the unseen world.

Über den Autor

Catherine Ann Crowe (1803-1876) was an English novelist, story writer and playwright, who also wrote for children. Though set in middle-class life, her novels had complicated, sensational plots, while also commenting on the predicaments of Victorian women brought up in seclusion to be mistreated by those men who did not subscribe to standards of decent behavior. Later in life Crowe turned increasingly to supernatural subjects, inspired by German writers.
