The Second Deluge (Annotated)
Über das eBook
The Second Deluge is a vigorous early-twentieth-century scientific romance in which astronomical catastrophe becomes the engine of both spectacle and moral inquiry. Serviss imagines Earth inundated after a vast watery body enters the solar system, reviving the biblical Flood through the language of modern astronomy. Its style blends journalistic clarity, popular science exposition, and melodramatic adventure, placing it alongside the speculative disaster fiction of H. G. Wells and the cosmic romances that flourished before modern science fiction had fully defined itself. Garrett P. Serviss was an American astronomer, journalist, and gifted popularizer of science, best known for translating complex celestial ideas into vivid prose for general readers. His background in newspaper writing and public scientific education shaped the novel's combination of technical confidence and narrative accessibility. Like much of his fiction, The Second Deluge reflects an era fascinated by new astronomical discoveries, anxious about planetary vulnerability, and eager to imagine science as both prophecy and salvation. Readers interested in the origins of science fiction will find this book especially rewarding. It offers not only dramatic catastrophe and inventive speculation, but also a revealing glimpse of how early modern culture reconciled religion, science, and apocalypse. For admirers of classic scientific romance, Serviss's novel remains a compelling and historically significant work.
