جون بوكان (1875 – 1940) كان كاتبًا ورجل دولة اسكتلنديًا، جمع بين الأدب والسياسة، واشتهر خاصة برواياته البوليسية والمغامرات. درس في جامعة أكسفورد، وعمل في الصحافة والإدارة قبل أن يتجه إلى الكتابة التي منحته شهرة واسعة بفضل روايته "التسعة والثلاثون درجة" (The Thirty-Nine Steps) التي أصبحت من كلاسيكيات أدب التجسس وأُلهمت منها أعمال سينمائية شهيرة. ألّف أكثر من 100 كتاب شملت الرواية والسيرة والتاريخ. إضافة إلى مسيرته الأدبية، شغل منصب الحاكم العام لكندا من 1935 حتى وفاته، ليكون ممثل التاج البريطاني هناك. جمع بوكان بين الفكر السياسي والخيال الأدبي، فترك أثرًا بارزًا في الأدب الإنجليزي وفي الحياة العامة البريطانية.
