The historical novel "The Three Musketeers" (French: Les Trois Mousquetaires), written by French author Alexandre Dumas, recounts the adventures of a young man named d'Artagnan (based on Charles de Batz-Castelmore d'Artagnan) in the years 1625-8, after he leaves home to travel to Paris, to join the Musketeers of the Guard.

Alexandre Dumas der Ältere (auch Alexandre Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie oder Alexandre Dumas père; * 24. Juli 1802 in Villers-Cotterêts, Département Aisne; † 5. Dezember 1870 in Puys bei Dieppe, Seine-Maritime) war ein französischer Schriftsteller. Heute ist er vor allem durch seine zu Klassikern gewordenen Historienromane bekannt, etwa Die drei Musketiere und Der Graf von Monte Christo.
