Waterloo

Waterloo is a moving short story by Arthur Conan Doyle (sometimes included) that praises the bravery of soldiers at the Battle of Waterloo. Set decades after the 1815 battle, the story is told through the memories of Corporal Gregory Brewster, an elderly veteran now living in humble circumstances. As an "old soldier" entertaining a young visitor, Brewster proudly recounts the dramatic moments at Waterloo—how he held off the Scots Guards and captured the French Eagle Brigade in the heat of the fighting. Doyle imbues the tale with warm patriotism and respect for the ordinary fighting man. In poignant scenes, Brewster's memories come to life, and he even wears his tattered uniform and medal as he relives the glory. The climax of the story reveals Brewster's heroism (he won the Victoria Cross for saving the regimental colors) and highlights themes of honor and remembrance.
