Ilse Silberbauer-Gottsberger wurde am 11. Juni 1940 in Graz, Österreich, geboren. Sie studierte Biologie, Mineralogie, Geologie, Pädagogik, Psychologie und Sport an der Universität Graz (1958-1963) und schloss mit dem Magister der Naturwissenschaften und dem Lehramt ab. Ihre Dissertation (Verteidigung 1965) befasste sich mit Neurotransmittern im Kleinhirn von Wirbeltieren. Von 1965 bis 1967 unterrichtete sie Biologie und Sport am Gymnasium in Leibnitz, Steiermark, und von 1967 bis 1969 Biologie, Physik und Chemie am Colégio Humboldt in São Paulo. Von Ende 1969 bis 1981 war sie Professorin für Systematische Botanik am Institut für Botanik der Universität Botucatu (UNESP), Bundesstaat São Paulo, und von 1981 bis 1983 Professorin am Institut für Biologie der Bundesuniversität Maranhão in São Luís, Brasilien. Nach ihrem Umzug nach Deutschland im Jahr 1983 wurde sie wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Institut für Botanik und Pflanzenphysiologie der Universität Gießen. Seit 1993 ist sie wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Lehrstuhl für Systematische Botanik und Ökologie der Universität Ulm und Kuratorin am Herbarium (ULM). Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Phytosoziologie und Phytogeographie tropischer Vegetation, sowie Fortpflanzungsbiologie (einschließlich Bestäubung und Samenausbreitung).
