Adolescence is a term social psychologists and educators have come to use to describe this stage. This is because the individual is at a higher level than a child, who is possessed by desires and whims and seeks to fulfill them without considering the possibility of achieving them. They possess a way of thinking that enables them to analyze the issues around them and connect them in a practical and logical manner. However, at the same time, they have not yet reached the level of full mental maturity that would enable them to truly achieve complete independence, make critical decisions, and determine the course of their lives.
The social significance of this stage stems from its being a path of two turning points that diverge at an angle of 180 degrees. Either the young person turns to productive use of their vitality and activity, becoming an active member of society, or they turn to frivolity and useless amusement, dragging those around them in their social environment astray.
