writing on water

I was walking with the Sheikh through the city streets late one autumn evening, shortly after I had been accepted as a disciple. As we passed a cemetery, the following words came out of the Sheikh's mouth:
Century-old writings... engraved by man on stone, are like writings etched on water by God.
Several years passed before I heard these words again. He repeated them again one day as we had just bid farewell to Ramadan, and the profound meaning of these words swept through my heart with all the sweetness of a jasmine-scented breeze. There is no peace, no security, no eternal thing except God Almighty. For centuries, people have sought to unravel the universe's mysticism, to find the key to unlock its treasures, to touch, taste, and experience the sweet tranquility of a life free of cares and worries. Indeed, what the eager hearts of people have been chasing has always been what every seeker seeks: a state of pleasure without the threat of despair, mystery, or separation. However, people often look for what they have lost in the wrong place, and engrave in their minds the idea that the material things of the world will solve this puzzle.
