Baroness Emma Orczy, born Emma Magdolna Rozália Mária Jozefa Borbála Orczy on September 23, 1865, in Tarnaörs, Hungary, was an illustrious author and playwright. There, Orczy attended the West London School of Art and later the Royal Academy of Arts, where her focus shifted from visual to literary arts. Her marriage to Montague Barstow in 1894 paramountly influenced her pursuits in writing and illustration.
Orczy's fame is predominantly attributed to her creation of 'The Scarlet Pimpernel', a series that began with a play co-written by her husband in 1903 and later adapted into a novel in 1905. The series, which includes all 35 titles, is acclaimed for its historical narratives set during the tumultuous era of the French Revolution. The figure of the Scarlet Pimpernel, an enigmatic English aristocrat who rescues individuals from the grim fate of the guillotine, established a new archetype in literature – the masked avenger and precursor to the modern superhero.
