An in-depth analysis of the history of Catholic schools in Scotland from their creation in the mid 19th century to the late 20th century. Raises many questions as to the value of denominational school education which remain highly relevant to current debate on education.

Born in Paisley Scotland in 1917. Graduated from the University of Glasgow BSc in 1939 and M.Ed in 1952. Qualified teacher who taught in Catholic schools for 5 years. Then Lecturer at Paisley College of Technology. Labour councillor 1962-78 including Convenor of Education Committee, Renfrew County Council and Vice Chair Education Committee Strathclyde Regional Council. Died 2005
