Родился во Франкфурте-на-Майне в зажиточной бюргерской семье. С ранних лет проявлял интерес к литературе, языкам и философии. Изучал юриспруденцию в Лейпцигском и Страсбургском университетах, однако вскоре посвятил себя искусству.

Широкую известность Гёте принес роман «Страдания юного Вертера» (1774), ставший символом эпохи «Бури и натиска» и оказавший колоссальное влияние на европейскую литературу. Позднее, в Веймаре, где он провел большую часть жизни, Гёте стал советником герцога, руководил театром и занимался наукой — ботаникой, оптикой, минералогией.
