Wie sage ich meiner Familie, dass ich ein Jahr lang auf See sein werde?

Die Idee brodelte schon lange in mir. Jahrelang hatte ich fasziniert die Übertragungen des Ocean Race verfolgt – Yachten, die durch die Wellen krachen, fliegende Gischt, Schiffe, die sich ihren Weg durch die unruhige See bahnen. Ich sehnte mich danach, es selbst zu erleben: den Mut, die Herausforderung, die stille Beherrschung der Elemente; die raue Einsamkeit und doch die tiefe Verbundenheit der Zusammenarbeit in einer Crew. Nicht nur ein Ozean, nicht nur eine einzige Äquatorüberquerung – ich wollte einmal ganz herum.

Nach vielen langen Gesprächen und Verhandlungen fanden meine Frau und ich eine Lösung, die wir beide akzeptieren konnten. Ich bewarb mich bei Clipper Ventures Ltd. um einen Platz in der Crew, und zwei Jahre später – nach einer intensiven Ausbildung in Grossbritannien – wurde ich offiziell als Segelmacher und Round-the-World-Crewmitglied unter Vertrag genommen.
