About the eBook

Vladimir Petrovich Lebedev (1869–1939) was a Russian writer, poet, and playwright, author of historical novellas, poetry collections, and plays. A native of Moscow, he was raised in the home of his uncle, the writer N.K. Lebedev, from whom he inherited an interest in history and literature. In the early 20th century, Lebedev was known as the author of poetry and editor of the journal "Istoricheskaya Letopis" (Historical Chronicle). After the Revolution, his historical prose was forgotten and remained unpublished for many decades.

The novella "For the Holy Monastery" transports the reader to the Time of Troubles, when the Russian land was invaded by Polish-Lithuanian troops. Against the backdrop of devastated cities and national suffering, the author depicts one of the most heroic events of that era—the defense of the Trinity-Sergius Monastery, which became a symbol of fortitude, faith, and unity.

Lebedev depicts not only the siege of the monastery but also the spiritual atmosphere of the era—inner doubts, the strength of faith, and the courage of ordinary people defending their land and sacred site. Historical accuracy is combined with vivid human characters and a tense, almost dramatic narrative.
