Was Vilas Fogg rich? Yes, certainly, but no one knew how he had acquired his wealth. Mr. Fogg wasn't one to tell anyone, and he didn't spend a lot of money, yet he didn't seem to be one to save money.
Did he travel? Perhaps? No one knew the map of the world better than he did. He seemed to have an exact knowledge of every country and city in the world. Sometimes, when the club members talked about travelers who had disappeared or been lost in some distant or unknown part of the world, Mr. Fogg would explain in a few clear words what had probably happened to them. His explanations proved him to be absolutely correct. He must have been a man who had traveled everywhere—at least in his mind and imagination.
