About the eBook

Emile Gaboriau (1832–1873) is one of the founders of the detective genre, whose influence on world literature is difficult to overestimate. His early works, written in a domestic and historical vein, did not bring him fame, but his first detective novel, The Lerouge Case (1866), instantly gained popularity. Gaboriau created the image of an intelligent, insightful police inspector Lecoq, who became the archetype of a detective in literature. His influence extends far beyond France: the novel Monsieur Lecoq inspired Wilkie Collins when creating The Moonstone, Robert Louis Stevenson imitated him in his detective stories, and Arthur Conan Doyle largely developed Gaboriau's ideas, creating the image of Sherlock Holmes - an improved quintessence of the hero of the French classic. Subsequently, his method was adopted by many other authors, including Edgar Wallace. This edition presents the classic novel by Gaboriau - "Case No. 113". It does not matter where the crime was committed - on the noisy streets of Paris or in the distant province. The main thing is who undertakes its investigation. And when Inspector Lecoq takes on the case, the criminals will not be able to escape. His sharp mind, logic and the art of deduction allow him to solve the most complex mysteries, making this novel an example of the golden age of detective literature.
