My father memorized the Holy Quran as a child, and then led people in the mosque in his youth. But this man, who maintained a balanced (sustainable) degree of religiosity throughout his life, also wrote contemplative and sentimental poetry, specifically love poetry, and read literary magazines published from inside, outside, and abroad, bringing them home to serve as a (vaccine) for his children. When he visited me in Paris, his eagerness to see the Eiffel Tower was no less than his eagerness to visit the Grand Mosque of Paris, and his interest in learning about the conditions of the Muslim community there was no less than his interest in learning about the old cafes where French writers used to sit. This balanced equation between religion and the world is not unique to my father, but it is not an easy equation, and therefore those capable of applying it are few, and my father was one of them.
