ألفريد بتلر هو مؤرخ بريطاني وُلد عام 1850 في إنجلترا، وتخصص في دراسة التاريخ المصري. حصل على درجة الدكتوراه من جامعة أكسفورد وعمل كمدرس في مصر، حيث اكتشف شغفه بالتاريخ المصري والإسلامي. أسس "جمعية تاريخ الآثار القبطية في مصر" وكتب العديد من المؤلفات المهمة حول التاريخ المصري، من بينها "الكنائس القبطية القديمة في مصر" و"الحياة في البلاط الملكي المصري". تُوفي في 15 أكتوبر 1936، تاركًا وراءه إرثًا مهمًا في دراسة التاريخ المصري.
