Is it possible to establish "laws" for "beauty"? In his interesting book, "Principles of Aesthetics," the French philosopher and musicologist Charles Lalo offers us an in-depth study of "aesthetics," discussing its historical development and trying to answer some of its puzzling questions. Lalo proposes a new idea that emphasizes the "dual nature of aesthetics" as an objective and subjective science at the same time. He argues that the "laws of beauty" are not mere abstract ideas, but rather "relations between the perceived subject and the perceived object," between "personal sensation" and "external reality." Lalo attempts to reconcile the "objective scientific method" and "critical philosophical thinking," calling for "an integrative aesthetics that unites reason, taste, and feeling."
