About the eBook
Since Chi Man-shik, one of the most famous Korean writers of the twentieth century and the most respected around the world, published his novel "Peace Under the Shadow of Heaven" in Seoul in 1938, the novel has occupied a distinguished place in the history of Korean literature in general, and among the works of fiction that express the society of that time. The Japanese occupation of Korea, in particular. In 15 chapters, Chih Man-shik presents us with a massive dramatic mural, packed with details, full of irony, contemplation, and black comedy, of the life of Mr. Professor Yoon, his family, and his constant struggles to maintain his status, wealth, and other gains, and to survive with his ambitions in the midst of a volatile society that is steadily moving toward the modern life of the twentieth century. Conflicts between family members, deteriorating social conditions, and the accelerating disintegration of the moral values and traditions of Korean society are mixed with an in-depth look at the conditions of Korean farmers under feudalism, to present the reader with an amazing, multi-layered, calm-toned picture of the hidden life of Koreans and their unique culture during the war. Chih Man-shik's works have been translated into several languages, including English, French, Russian, and German.
