Malik ibn al-Marhal al-Sabti was the great poet of the Marinid state in the Far Maghreb and the writer of his time. Ibn al-Khatib says about him in Al-Ihatta fi Akhbar Granada: the poet of Morocco, the writer of his eloquence, and the standard-bearer of the teacher with fame, an example of profusion that combines ease of pronunciation, lineage of meaning, benefit of generation, and precision of invention.
