About the eBook

James Augustus St. John's The History of the Manners and Customs of Ancient Greece is an expansive three-volume work of nineteenth-century classical scholarship devoted not to battles and constitutions, but to the lived texture of Greek civilization. It surveys domestic life, education, religion, festivals, food, dress, marriage, labor, social ranks, and public amusements, drawing copiously on ancient literary testimony. Its style is learned, discursive, and richly antiquarian, characteristic of Victorian attempts to reconstruct antiquity as a moral and cultural world rather than a mere chronology of events. St. John, a British journalist, traveller, and prolific man of letters, brought to the work the habits of wide reading and comparative observation formed through his historical and travel writing. His interest in societies, customs, and everyday institutions—visible in his broader writings on the Mediterranean and the East—helped shape this ambitious reconstruction of Greek life. Though modern scholarship has revised many details, his erudition and curiosity remain evident throughout. This work is recommended to readers interested in classical reception, social history, and the Victorian imagination of antiquity. It offers both a substantial compendium of Greek customs and a revealing example of how nineteenth-century scholars sought to make the ancient world intellectually and morally intelligible.
