About the eBook

In The Devil's Own, Randall Parrish fashions a vigorous historical romance set amid the unsettled frontier tensions of the Black Hawk War era. The novel combines pursuit, danger, conspiracy, and chivalric devotion with the brisk pacing characteristic of early twentieth-century popular adventure fiction. Its style is direct, atmospheric, and melodramatically charged, placing private loyalties and moral courage against a landscape of political violence and social uncertainty. Parrish, a Wisconsin-born journalist, lawyer, and Congregational minister, brought to his fiction a practiced storyteller's command of incident and a Midwesterner's fascination with regional history. His many romances often transform episodes from America's past into narratives of honor, endurance, and identity. In The Devil's Own, that background informs both the frontier setting and the novel's concern with character tested under pressure. Readers interested in historical adventure, frontier romance, and the popular fiction that shaped American memory of the nineteenth century will find this book rewarding. Though written for entertainment, it offers more than escapism: it reveals how Parrish's generation imagined courage, nationhood, and personal integrity in the shadow of conflict.
