About the eBook

The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola is not a devotional treatise in the ordinary sense but a carefully structured manual for prayer, self-examination, and discernment. Organized as a four-week retreat, it guides the exercitant through meditations on sin, the life of Christ, the Passion, and the Resurrection. Its style is concise, procedural, and exacting, reflecting late medieval ascetic traditions while anticipating the disciplined spirituality of the Catholic Reformation. Ignatius of Loyola, born Íñigo López de Loyola in 1491, was a Basque soldier whose conversion followed a severe battle wound and prolonged convalescence. His reading of saints' lives and Christ's life redirected his ambitions from chivalric glory to spiritual service. The Exercises emerged from his own interior struggles, mystical insights, and pastoral experience, later becoming foundational to the Society of Jesus, which he founded in 1540. This book is recommended to readers interested in Christian spirituality, religious psychology, Jesuit history, or the art of disciplined reflection. Though demanding, it rewards patient engagement by revealing a profound method for ordering desire, testing motives, and seeking freedom before God.
